The Bachelor’s Jake: “I couldn’t get a date in high school”

It’s hard to believe that a man who has gorgeous women throwing themselves at him on national television ever had trouble finding a date. But that’s exactly how it was for heartthrob pilot Jake Pavelka, the current star of ABC’s hit series The Bachelor. During a romantic one-on-one date with contestant Gia Allemand at a vineyard, Jake sheepishly admitted that his nickname in high school was “Mr. Dateless.”

He wasn’t exaggerating. “I was just shy around girls at that age,” Jake tells Life & Style. “I tended to be bullied in the seventh, eighth and ninth grades.” And while he’s a catch now, there’s one person who wasn’t surprised to hear that Jake had a tough time with the ladies when he was younger. “The time that I spent with Jake, I could see that he was probably very shy in high school,” recently eliminated contestant Ella Nolan tells Life & Style.

But that’s not stopping Jake from trying to find love on TV’s most popular reality dating show. “I’m not looking for the most beautiful woman out there,” he told Life & Style. “But I’m looking for a heart of gold — and character, lots of character.”

Taylor Swift Splurges on a New Penthouse

While most girls her age are spending their disposable income on movies and makeup, superstar singer Taylor Swift, 20, has just plunked down nearly $2 million on a luxurious penthouse in her favorite city in the world: Nashville. “I’m so excited!” says Taylor of the 4,062-square-foot, three-bedroom home she has recently purchased in the swanky Adelicia condo development. Located just minutes away from the city’s downtown area, the high-tech condo has 24-hour concierge service, tight security and lots of space for a young, single superstar to relax between world tours.

“I love Nashville,” says Taylor, who grew up on a Christmas tree farm in Pennsylvania with her parents and younger brother, Austin, but always longed to live in superstardom. “I never expected that all this would happen to me,” says Taylor, who still loves living as normal of a life as possible. Fans often see her cruising local roads or shopping around town. “I love Target and Walmart — I find the coolest things there,” she says. The star, who describes her tastes as girlie, says she’s looking forward to decorating her bachelorette pad in a “quirky, whimsical style,” when her current tour for her second album, Fearless, winds down in June. “I love interior designing,” she says.

Lada Gaga was surprisingly normal!

Before the days of outrageous hairdos and avant-garde ensembles, Grammy-nominated Lady Gaga — aka Stefani Germanotta — was just an Italian Catholic schoolgirl from New York. “I was a bit insecure in high school,” the 23-year-old star reveals.

“I used to get made fun of for being either too provocative or too eccentric, so I started to tone it down. I didn’t fit in, and I felt like a freak.”

But once she started college at New York University, she says she began showing her true colors.

“I really let the real me out,” the pop sensation reveals. And clearly the “Poker Face” and “Bad Romance” performer hasn’t suppressed herself since.

“I’m an outspoken and extreme dresser,” she admits. “I am inspired by photography and art, but mostly by New York.”

She defends her quirkiness and explains she does it all for her fans, who can relate to feeling like an outsider. “This is really who I am, and it took a long time to be okay with that,” she says.

ELIN THREATENS TO TAKE THE KIDS

At the center of what’s quickly shaping up to be a bitter split between golf legend Tiger Woods and his humiliated wife, Elin, are the couple’s two innocent young children — daughter Sam, 2, and son Charlie, 10 months. As someone who’s lived through a similar nightmare, Ivana Trump says Tiger and Elin should be grateful their children are too young to comprehend the extent of their father’s cheating — or a potential battle over their custody. “Thank heavens they’re too young to really understand what’s happening,” Ivana tells Life & Style. “They can’t read, and they won’t be watching the TV coverage.”

“Tiger knows Elin is planning to divorce him,” an insider in the golfer’s camp tells Life & Style. “He’s trying to come to terms with it.” And when Elin leaves, she appears determined to take the kids with her. Elin has decided to seek full custody and bring up the children without their father’s involvement, new reports say. Several other reports have suggested that once her split from Tiger becomes official, Elin may want to take the kids home to her native Sweden, perhaps as early as this holiday season. And if that’s what she wants, it’s likely she’ll be able to. “What normally happens is that the judge rules that [the mother] can go wherever she likes as long as it doesn’t cut the father out of the children’s life and make visitation difficult for him,” celebrity divorce lawyer Raoul Felder tells Life & Style.

Still, the next several months could get rocky for them since Tiger’s not about to let his kids go without a fight. Quietly, the golf star “has been exploring his legal options about keeping his children in the state of Florida,” the insider says of Tiger’s intent to fight for the children.

INSIDE JILLIAN BARBERIE’S BABY SHOWER!

Dressed in a nonmaternity Marchesa gown, Good Day LA host Jillian Barberie Reynolds celebrated the upcoming birth of her son, Rocco Reynolds, with a lavish baby shower at the Montage Beverly Hills on Dec. 12. “It’s been completely different this time around,” Jillian, who has a 2-year-old daughter, Ruby, with husband Grant, tells Life & Style. “I was a huge whale, but now I’m just a dolphin. I’m not as rotund!”

Guests including Sharon Osbourne and Kourtney Kardashian (who gave birth just two days later!) noshed on tea sandwiches and scones and sipped signature cocktails like the Jilliantini and Rocco Royal. The room was decked out with beautiful white roses, tulips, hydrangeas and freesias by floral design studio Mark’s Garden. After lunch, the group indulged in a vanilla butter-cream custom cake by Cake Divas by Joan & Leigh — Jillian’s favorite! Guests left with a LeSportsac silver tote filled with gifts valued at about $500.

“We’re probably done after this,” says Jillian, “although we thought we’d probably be done after Ruby and, boom, I got pregnant with Rocco. So who knows.”
